TO LAUGH OFTEN AND MUCH,

TO WIN THE RESPECT OF INTELLIGENT PEOPLE

AND THE AFFECTION OF CHILDREN,

TO EARN THE APPRECIATION OF HONEST CRITICS

AND ENDURE THE BETRAYAL OF FALSE FRIENDS,

TO APPRECIATE BEAUTY,

TO FIND THE BEST IN OTHERS

TO LEAVE THE WORLD A BIT BETTER,

WHETHER BY A HEALTHY CHILD, A GARDEN PATCH,

OR A REDEEMED SOCIAL CONDITION,

TO KNOW THAT EVEN ONE LIFE HAS BREATHED

BETTER BECAUSE YOU HAVE LIVED

THIS IS TO HAVE SUCCEEDED.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Benjamin Franklin came up with 13 virtues to achieve moral perfection.

Although Franklin never completely achieved this moral perfection, he did accomplish most of these virtues. One of the best quotes to live by is at the end of Chapter 9 of Franklin's autobiography:

"In reality, there is, perhaps, no one of our natural passions so hard to subdue as pride. Disguise it, struggle with it, beat it down, stifle it, mortify it as much as one pleases, it is still alive, and will every now and then peep out and show itself; you will see it, perhaps, often in this history; for, even if I could conceive that I had completely overcome it, I should probably be proud of my humility."
